Hi Sean,

We should check if they have an API. Create our own front-end app and rip the suck right out of their UI.

Joel,

I think you are missing the point of what Jerome is talking about... you need to hire UX designers who are good at their job to organize your tools more effectively. As a former user of timesheets.com, I can attest that it is one of the most rudimentary time tracking systems i've ever used.. its actually easier and more intuitive to design your own excel spreadsheet and use that. But as Jerome says.. im probably also not the right customer for you seeing as I did take the time to create my own excel spreadsheet instead of using timesheets.com ;)

Oh - and one final note after looking over the Harvest web site. Harvest doesn't track hourly time for payroll as far as I can tell. They ONLY track project based, billable time which can then be invoiced. In contrast, we have a dual timesheet system. This allows an employee to clock into work for payroll, and ALSO log project time. These are two completely different things because the time is treated differently.

Harvest doesn't have any component to track hourly time so of course they wouldn't have a need to distinguish between hourly and project based time like we do. Since we do both hourly and project time tracking, our system has this need, and this is why we're careful to make the distinction. We use color (green for hourly, blue for project) as well as titles. Fortunately we seem to have done a good job, because our customers haven't had a problem figuring it out.

Well, we can't just call the titles payroll and billable because not everyone uses the hourly side for payroll. Some just use it for time-off tracking, or tracking hourly time worked by salaried workers, and on the billable side some just use it for job costing or other types of analysis. In fact you'd be surprised at the various ways people use the web site, which is extremely flexible and allows for a lot of different permutations depending on customer needs as things can be renamed, or turned on and off. Payroll and billable are just the most common uses, which is why I used the terms in my previous post.

As for user experience, we pay a lot of attention to that, obviously, as without a good user experience we would not be a successful company. I wonder, did you watch the 2 minute training video we have? You were prompted to watch the video when you logged in for the first time. While it's not required to use the web site, it does answer the basic questions

We have a different approach to that of a traditional time recording provider. Out site is a from-the-ground-up product of 7 years of hard work, so I would definitely expect you to find it quite different from Harvest.

While Harvest is a fine product, I'm sure, I think you should give us the 'college try' of a couple of weeks at least before throwing us under the bus. Obviously you're likely to prefer Harvest if you've used them for months and have never even tried using us. This is simple human nature. We're different from Harvest in every way. But you might find that we've got a couple of neat tricks up our sleeve when you start logging you time. We get a lot of compliment from employers when their employees like our software.

Joel, you are absolutely right. I do not know the service and STC is a brand new client. But the fact remains that I did not like the UI and UX ts.com offers.

Hourly vs project time, you actually help make my point. If you are talking about Payroll vs Billable, just call it that. Problem solved.

I am glad you can turn off the comics and wall/notifications.

Official time: Tracking time using it is, of course, a great idea. Showing it? Not sure I need it.

To be fair, I didn't really want to use your product from the first time I logged in. The point is not that Harvest is better but rather that the platform is transparent to the user. I didn't need to learn anything. That's UX.

Thank you for your insight and for taking the time to reply.

Hi Jerome,

Sorry you don't like our product, but I feel it's important to correct a few mischaracterizations in your post.

First and foremost, only a specifically designated employee can run payroll. You could not have done this from within your account unless you were specifically granted the right to do so. There’s no way to grant this right ‘by accident’ either. First your account must be at a supervisor level, at a minimum, and then the right to run payroll must be specifically enabled.

Also, you have criticized a number of things without a real understanding of the system. For instance, our system tracks both hourly and project time, so titles help administrators differentiate between time recorded for payroll and time recorded for billing. Sorry you don’t like the labels (or the icon legend for that matter). Feel free to ignore them.

The daily comic and status update features can be disabled by the administrator, so if they are available within your account, it’s because your administrator didn’t mind you having access to those features. The status update is used by many customers for intra-company communication, not social purposes. Many companies have been adapting these kinds of useful social tools into business uses. For instance, Salesforce recently introduced its new native product ‘chatter’.

Finally, as for the official time, you are correct that most computers do display the local time. But what about the problem that all time on computers drift and must be re-synced in order to display the proper time? The time you saw under the clock come from our servers which are synced much more often than the typical Windows machine which only syncs once a week. Also, if an employee were to try to change their computer clock, using our official time would prevent timecard padding or outright theft, which is why we use our time rather than your client computer time for punches.

Since STC Associates is a brand new customer, I can only assume you haven’t really used our product at all yet. Perhaps after you actually try our service you might feel differently about it?

Hi Franto,

I used Away3D (for FP10). The shading is done with a ShadingColorMaterial, the colors are from Kuler. <del datetime="2010-02-10T09:30:47+00:00">I updated the file and you can right click to view the source code.</del>

You can view the source <a href="http://www.wemakedotcoms.com/landings/2010/02/srcview/index.html" rel="nofollow">here</a>.

Enjoy,

Hi Jerome,

first of all, great work :)

did you do this roaming in away3d or away3dLite? and for light are you using baked texture? I really want to know how to that such colored cubes with ligt into my projects. What you mind share code for that? I'm using away3dLite, so baked textures are only option (as far as I know)

Thank you,
